Because progressives have brought us pretty much all progress in the last couple of centuries:

- labor unions gave people job safety, reasonable pay, and reasonable working hours;
- the creation of the FDA gave us food and drug safety;
- government backing of amortized mortgages brought home ownership to the masses;
- the civil rights and women's rights movements brought true equality closer than ever.

(I'm too tired on day 9 of this cold to pull together the whole list, but that's a good start.)

Conservatives fought all of this.
