There are good database developers out there (Fox developers, SQL Server developers) who aren't aware of how someone can create pivot tables/pivot charts/slicers/etc in Excel quite easily from database tables/views. In many cases where that's true, they've just never seen it done and had no occasion to be aware of it.
And even if a developer has some awareness of general Excel functionality with pivot tables and the ability to read data in, they might not be aware of some of the newer self-service BI tools in Excel like Power View.

Qlikview has some strong pros and some strong cons. These third party self-service BI tools offer some great functionality, but you have to buy into their methodology and the training costs to get up to speed aren't obvious at first.
