How many files are in that directory? Is it a network drive? Can you copy these files to a local drive instead?

A while ago I was having some problems with adir, network drive and lots of files. I can not search anymore for details, but it was in October 2006 and I posted here about these problems in case you want to search.

Don't think it applies here, but just throwing the possibility.
