>>eBooks are fine for casual reading, but for things I want to keep, I want physical books. We own thousands and while I buy a lot fewer than I used to (mostly using the library these days), we haven't stopped acquiring books.

We tried Kindle Unlimited so kids could have access to lots of books without needing a credit card for constant purchases. For those who don't know: Kindle Unlimited allows access to hundreds of thousands of ebooks for a set monthly fee.

We discovered it's not so unlimited (tops out at 10 books after which you need to start removing to make way for more) but also the offerings exclude a lot of the new books the kids want. Seems to me Kindle Unlimited is similar to belonging to the public library except you're paying $9.99 per month for the privilege.

My experience is that for travel it's great to load some books on the Kindle but for a family wanting to share books without having to buy multiple ecopies or rely on Kindle Unlimited to offer the book, paper books still make sense.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
