Well, this is all more or less a nogo.
anyything you place in the middle of the wire will be a problem to signal quality
If you not need to swith forward / backward every minute but work one day with this and one day the other a port replicator is an idea to consider. I use one an my convertible that just has some USB ports (even no LAN) and it works like a charm.
Needs you to connect just one USB Cable and that's it. The other labtop is still available over its own interface. ... :)
