Yes, some did, but- Verizon a large independent - is a remnant of NY Telephone, once a part of AT&T.
Almost important as the breakup was the Carterfone decision http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carterfone which broke AT&T's - stranglehold on the devices that could be connected to its network.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
