I think the SQL Server native client has problems with varchar(max) column. Also, can you give a link to that he needs to install?

I'll check the version of his database.

BTW, he told me that it works fine on that same machine with a different database. So, it could be database properties... I'll check compatibility level of DB with him next.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
