It's likely that in our lifetimes, cancer and its sledgehammer treatments will be like Plague or more recently Polio: a serious disease once upon a time, but reduced to historical relevance by inexpensive vaccines and treatments. Most of us are too late for some of the treatments (such as the rapidly developing Cervical Cancer Vaccines) but there's an array of other good stuff just around the corner.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act

the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
