I agree with you, sort of. But this kind of question lets you measure a number of things about the candidate, including sincerity.

You may remember that in (I think it was) 2012, in one of the Republican debates, candidates were asked whether they belief in the theory of evolution. Leaving aside that "believe" is the wrong verb, the fact that virtually all of them said "no" meant to me that they wouldn't use science in decision-making, and that's dangerous. While the question wasn't about the critical issues of the day, it said something about how they face the world.
