Only you can know why you think what you do.
I personally think that your motivation is intellectual.. however much I might disagree with it.

That said- regarding race in political thought.
Since the passage of the civil rights legislation of the 1960's by the democrats virtually ever southern state has switched from blue to red. Before that, virtually every southern state had been blue since Lincoln's election as a republican.
It's pretty obvious that race has been a huge factor in shaping political allegiance in the south.
As long as either party, repub or dem, relies on the south to achieve a majority it will have to deal with that label
