I've always loved blues, but more the Chicago blues than the down home Mississippi blues (except for a few like Mississippi John Hurt who is one of my heroes because his guitar playing always sent shivers up my spine). The problem for me has always been the work required to figure out what they're saying. Robert Johnson is one of the great kings of the blues, but try listening to him some time and he may as well be singing in another language. I can enjoy some of the musicianship of the blues players, but translating the singing into a language I can follow is just too much work.
