>My recent experience is that young developers believe their job is to be spellbound in the midst of a complicated swirl of options, so they are reluctant to develop using Soviet LAMP. Offer LAMP and they'll spend happy days researching a swarm of firefly products that will deliver world peace if only the developer is allowed (paid) to learn all about it.

That depends on the venue, I think.
Certainly the corporate types and gurus who make their livings by showing that they're using the latest and greatest do that.
On the other hand I know several small shops who make their livings doing data processing web sites on a fixed price basis for small to medium businesses.
Just about all of them are using LAMP.

In the corporate world, someone once told me that there are things that you do to impress your boss and things you do to make the business better, and they rarely coincide.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
