>>I was forced to switch to Windows from Unix because there was zero support for Unix among my network partners, who are key to my practice.
Those guys, all still good friends of mine, told me that however slick Unix might be, everyone wants Windows and that's where they were putting their resources. So, for Unix support, I was on my own.
>>As it turned out, they were right.

They were right that "everyone want[ed] Windows." Sure thing. There was a time when teenagers spent 24 hours camped outside stores to purchase one of the first copies of Windows 95. But for this to apply to the development mess- you would have to have been hanging out for a ridiculous Rube Goldberg 2015 environment for development. You wanted this, so vendors had to deliver it? Or vendors made inwardly focused decisions that backfired with consumers walking away in droves apart from developers hitched too closely to the vendor wagon?
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
