I use a daskeyboard and a logitech left handed wireless mouse. With today's Linux distro's I didn't even have to program the volume control on my keyboard. That said, if you do use one of the keyboards that has all the fancy extra keys they are all programmable using the whatever the distro provides. For example I always program the extra key on the lower left (some call it the windows key) to open the file manager (on windows that would be windows explorer) using "windows+E" which matches the windows setup.
