Yes, my mother was a freelance legal stenographer (her most famous clients were Louis Nizer and Richard Nixon - think about that contrast!) Post word processing, I doubt that there are many legal stenographers around any more.

Except for one holdout (he'd better retire soon, he's older than dirt) all my MD's are using laptops and recording their observations directly, so there's no more note taking and dictation or transcription. Frequently, they are selecting suggested options and are not typing. One MD told me that he was forced to do it by ACA, but now that he's using it, he's glad that he is.

One of my late wife's MD's dictated into a phone that translated in real time. He ran his practice off that phone- scheduling appointments, billing, med lookups, etc.
