I'm told these were being used ? 5 years ago in the US. If you are given food with sliced egg, ask yourself whether the slices include the narrowing ends of the egg or the half of its length with no yolk. Can't see it? May well have come from sausage.

Google elsewhere: there are reputable news articles and even samples of how to make them, including the shell, as well as advisories on how to spot the fakes.

Also check out "Beyond Eggs" that is backed by Bill Gates and has been promising to take on the poultry industry with a vegan alternative to laid eggs. They don't add shells and pretend it's real, though: their goal is to produce a cheaper alternative for condiments and baking. Apparently you can't tell the difference.
