I do not know anyone here in Oahu Hawaii that is in their 20's and OWN's their own place as a result of paying for it themselves, and there are places ion the mainland like San Francisco where the housing is even more expensive.

The price index for college tuition grew by nearly 80 percent between August 2003 and August 2013!!! Someone trying to say "ooh I did ALL on my own 40 years ago so you should be able to" is just ridiculous. And the increase in cost of textbooks is about the same too! Income rates have not kept up with these costs.
