>>If you'll take note, I also don't go around labeling things as "socialist".

BF>I'll probably have more in common with a Republican in Massachusetts than a Democrat in Mississippi.
BF>I'd rather categorize ideas as ethical/unethical, smart/not-so-smart, effective/ineffective than Socialist/Whatever, Conservative/Whatever.
KG>I don't know a true socialist, but certainly a single-payer, national health care system (which most Americans oppose) would be good example of socialism.

If we both agree with Bill that it's better to focus on pros and cons rather than what some perceive as a "kick me" sign, more than happy to see it. It's your example, so: single payer health system: what's good? What's bad? Says who? I know it's a big topic, so maybe start with cost and quality, focusing on (say) the French health system.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
