Sihanouk tried to follow the Swiss/WW II role model, but could not keep his borders free of VC. Without US nodding (some say active CIA support) the monarchy would not have been toppled. Khmer Rouge grew afterwards that much stronger - somehow reminiscent of ISIS in Syria and Iraq
