A cynic might say that these pats on the head are a remarkably cheap way for a vendor to create a churn of blogs, presentations and good news with attributes of rolling thunder and independence- but actually all under vendor control if the pat on the head is something people work towards and then are reluctant to give up.

This is a very tantalizing argument but one that is not well-formulated. You mentioned other professions - well, take a look at the issues that have occurred in the climate science/environmental science world in the last couple of decades regarding climate change, global warming. I'm not making a political statement - I'm pointing out the HUGE, and I mean OUTRAGEOUSLY HUGE amount of deception and corruption that has gone on.

Again, you continue to speak in these generalities about "pat on the head by a vendor". If you cannot produce meaningful examples, either here or privately, these just aren't interesting or compelling. Your observations are certainly poetic, but without producing some specifics, that's about all I can say. :)
