>>> (hole in the ozon layer)

>>What about it?

>It was said in the 90-ties that hole in the ozon layer would eventually grow to span the whole earth and it would be catastrophic for the rest of the world. As always with these things, there are multiple factors involved. CFC's are one factor, but the extremely cold nature and vortex winds on the antartic another. That is the reason why it occurs mainly there.
Couple of years ago I wanted to buy a freezer box to keep on the terrace. Sorry, no can do, it won't operate below -8 or so, because the gas in it becomes fluid and the compressor would try to compress a fluid and would break. Why now - our old boxes have been practically outside all the time. Because they don't use freon anymore, it's either propane or butane. One of the two is cheap but liquefies at around -10, and the other one is too expensive. So eventually we made room inside and bought one. You have to keep it warm to have it keep cold, go figure.
Meanwhile, bought an AC. Knowing that half of it is outside, I asked about the liquid it uses. Freon. Go next figure.
