One might also say that at least the Bush administration was responding to a very bloody attack on American soil. I think the circumstances on that issue are enormously complicated. But as I look back on it - yes, it probably was torture and probably did violate international law. I also believe some intelligence sources who say that it did provide some valuable information.

People sometimes accuse me of being very rough on Obama - maybe that's true, but it's partly because of the standard he claimed to set....and how miserably he has failed in upholding even a modicum of transparency.

Kevin,

I see no difference between violating a law, and choosing NOT to execute existing laws at least if it comes from the "official" side. If a law is violated it is not executed by intend. (Because, if once violated it's later not executed) A law is in use or not. As simple as that. If one wobble around, its better to skip it at all. And a law must be clear and distinct.

Others claim that almost any of the information the services brought up are useless. We had this tradition of burning witches and it is very well known that 99.9999% of people will admit anything under torture.

I only give you exampless out of your environment. And I would not claim that, let's say Pakistan, is a comparsion. I'm not sure if examples out of germany will mean anything to you, so we need to stuck to the better known (And I'm not interested on overseas day to day business, too)
The U.S. is special in this case, because it it's so full of propaganda of human rights, pointing on others about the wrong doings etc. pp. It's only to point out that all this propaganda is outright lie and, if it fits into U.S. strategy, worthless. Not that I say that anybody else does better.
