If I'm not mistaken, many of the items in the Bill of Rights came about from experience in the events leading up to and during the Revolutionary War -- basically as a "safety check" against a government that has become tyrannical and no longer reflects the general will of the people. An armed populace has a much better chance at a revolt against an tyrannical than an unarmed one.
