Ouch!

You're right- the label "amendment" confirms that these things are not cast in stone and never were meant to be. And I can just imagine your friends- I have some of them also here in Texas. It won't be easy to sway people who regard arsenals as symbols of citizenship and pride. They'll hide their weapons away and call it patriotism. I understand where they're coming from, fwiw.

When they changed their gun laws, the Australian government bought weapons as they were handed in rather than just making a new law. That was a good start.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
