Well, I can't speak for the quality of school lunches in the UK. But school lunches over here are (generally) pretty nasty.

Let's take the concept of a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. Even someone as dangerous as I am in the kitchen can produce a decent grilled cheese sandwich that even my wife and six year old will eat. But I can still remember being puzzled how my high school cafeteria made the most disgusting sandwiches I've ever tasted. And I attended one of the more affluent high schools in Central PA. (Ironically, our rival school was Red Land High School, whose Little League Baseball Team made that incredible run in the Little League World Series).

I'll give Michelle Obama an A for effort on trying to do something with school lunches. But the problem is, she wound up being involved in a solution that became FAR worse than the original problem.

Form some kids - the problem is that the choices aren't healthy enough. For other teens (usually the teen athletes), the portions were just way too small. And a common reaction was that the taste was terrible.
