Yes, if you maintain aspect ratio and use a reasonable integer divisor it can be OK. But, at 1280 x 800 the OP was going to 16:10 instead of 16:9.
Besides fuzziness and aspect ratio problems at some non-native resolutions, some people are very sensitive to the colour fringes that can result.
