Alex,
We have domains with Godaddy and gandi.net .
Gandi is French and has that European obsession with security and privacy, including your registration details and any email you host with them. Godaddy is cheaper to start, but over time the extras add up- e.g. private registration (recommended to avoid spammers) can cost as much as the domain itself. Though there are a lot more Godaddy coupons out there to reduce the cost. Just beware of initial cheap prices that lure you in for a year and then hit you with increases!
The only other issue would be that part of Godaddy's system went down in ?2012, taking a lot of customer servers, email and websites offline for an extended period, including our US servers that we hosted ourselves. Apparently caused by internal DNS problems, A lot of people were left scrabbling around for alternative nameservers and registration providers. It has not happened since, but actually it never should have happened.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
