"red zone" is apt.

The repubs are going to have to do some soul searching, the way the dems did before passing the civil rights legislation during the mid 1960's.

Had the dems opted not to pass it in order to keep the southerners and other crazies happy, Ted Cruz, Wayne LaPierre, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson would almost certainly be democrats - or as they were called then "Dixiecrats."
Before the 1960's that coalition of unions, fiscal liberals, bible thumpers, gun lovers, war mongers and bigots was even more contentious than what the repubs have today.

The only thing that unified the current crowd was its hatred of Obama- which they expressed before he had ever set foot in the White House. No real surprise there. The Dixiecrats would have been worse - they lynched people.

Except for Rand Paul, there's no repub today that Ike would recognize as a repub.
That party will have to make some decisions similar to those the dems made if it is serious about governance.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
Malcolm Forbes, Sr.
