Hugo said that he'd support using the military as a defensive force and I agree with him.
The US was attacked by Japan and Hitler declared war on the US.
Regarding the Russians.. they were a key ally.
This is a fascinating read: "The 900 Days: the Siege of Leningrad." by Harrison Salisbury.

The point is that the US and Canada have not been attacked by any country since then and therefore the justification for projecting force in other countries is non-existent.
