Never worked for me, as those are folders on the desktop, which means I have to close or minimize what I'm doing so I can see it. As I usually have at least a dozen apps running, highly impractical.

Unicode perhaps? In ideographic alphabets, you can have thousands.

Windows search is rather unusable - it usually fails to find what I'm looking for. And it requires indexing of everything, which significantly slows down the machine (last time I let it run, which was long ago) and even then it still fails (but at least it gets to read the content of every document and call home to tell).
