All versions of Windows since Windows 7 come with built-in or freely downloadable antivirus. It's called Windows Defender in Windows 10. Those of my clients using it have not been infected (to anyone's knowledge, FWIW). The built-in Microsoft product seems to be fairly low on resource use and is not intrusive in normal usage.

If you regularly visit a wide range of websites and/or dodgy ones then some other products have fared better than the Windows AV. One comparison test is at http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/avc_factsheet2015_09.pdf . At this time I would avoid AVG, as that product has bloated badly over the years and they are now selling your personal information to support their free products: http://thehackernews.com/2015/09/avg-antivirus.html

IMO the most serious threat to end users currently is malicious web sites and malicious advertising in ad networks/banner advertising. These may employ so-called "zero day" attacks that AV products don't yet know about so it's important to block them before they even hit your computer. You can use a dedicated product such as Adblock Plus: https://adblockplus.org/ . For even more protection you can block all active web content (by default; you can whitelist sites you trust) using FireFox and NoScript: https://noscript.net/ , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NoScript .
