As popularised by Robert Heinlein. ;-) For most online products and services (apart from the likes of UT that continues to allow freeloaders:) unless there's a defined fee, we should expect to be subject to advertising or to having habits and interests packaged for sale. Apart from the MS familiars who are accustomed to eating for free, everybody here paid for one or usually several iterations of Windows and might have preferred the paid option for Windows10 as well- but it seems we are not the target population. "Developers, developers, developers" has been replaced by "Gen Y, Gen Y, Gen Y" whose expectations include "free" OS. Meanwhile we and our grandpa boxes are being relegated to history.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
