You just made me take a look at the software I run. I have only three things from M$ in regular use: Windows, Skype and Fox. The latter two because I was using them for more than a year before they bought them, and the former because I need it to run Fox. And, ah, yes, SQL server, but that was not my decision. I'd rather run MySql or Postgress.

From everything else... let's see, for office apps, Libre. For photo/video - Gimp (freebie), Magix (from some German outfit). PDF - Foxit. File management, FTP, file viewer: TotalCommander (Ghisler). Shell: bbLean (freebie), haven't run Windows Explorer on my machine since 2008 or so. Instead of a menu, Launchy. Virtuals - VMWare. Ebook reader, Calibre (free). Browser: Mozilla (since 1996, when it was Netscape). Text editor, e (http://www.e-texteditor.com/, probably Chinese). Video viewer, potplayer (VLC as reserve). Image viewer, ACDsee from 1998. Email, Thinderbird (still have emails since 1998 when it was in Netscape). SQL management, Toad (Quest, freebie version suffices). Profiler - ah, found a good one at https://expressprofiler.codeplex.com/downloads/get/849229 - yes, codeplex, and so much better than what's bundled with SQL server. Music player: foobar (freebie).
