Yes, but how did they get that money to spend?
If they got it buy selling US Treasury bonds, then by that logic my retirement funds have not been kept in a "lockbox" either, nor would I want them kept there.

I agree that much of the money the US Government borrows is spent foolishly.
I especially disliked the trillion they spent slaughtering innocent Iraqi's.

But.. they got that money by issuing US Treasury bonds.
Lots of people, including myself, buy those bonds to fund their retirements.
The government of China has bought trillions worth of US Treasury bonds.
Apparently the people overseeing the SS funds did that too.
