I'm not sure about why you're not hearing sound. Make sure the sound volume for the chrome app is turned up. The volume mixer in Windows 7 has settings for each application.
As for popups and ads in chrome - ha well that is another problem for sure. In addition to the admuncher app..I use these extensions:
adblock
Ghostery
adblock plus
adguard bocker
privacy badger
https everywhere

If I just go to cnn.com - all these things together block over 80 things. I never see any ads anywhere. It's a shame that we have to go to so much trouble to avoid these things - but once you have it setup right it makes surfing the net a lot better experience.
