Aren't you a NET dude: what's the first element in a VB.NET or C# array?

Sorry, couldn't resist. All of these things are man-made and like any other rule or law devised by hopefully clever people, we just have to live with it. ;-)

Meanwhile be thankful you're not enjoying the wonderful byzantine pleasures of C++ strings that are arrays. ;-)
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
