I try to have no AV on my working VM's - they are in less danger, as I do not surf or do other infect-laden activity with those. Surfing done with either linux VM on laptop or dedicated stationary box in the sub-net available for WLAN and guests. Modernized Floppy Net utilizing USB-3 sticks from dedicated box, no tunneling of different sub-nets. Mail in dedicated VM, as there are usually a couple coming in via that vector and lay silently as the attachments are not clicked, but probably the biggest danger: thinking of moving that into a linux VM for higher borders infection would have to climb. VM disc containers could be infected if system is infected, so sometimes whole systems are checked.

Special dev PC not connected to the net (except for those instances where install/update/patch is needed, then cable is plugged in and removed after activity).
Works for me but my power cost is quite high here ;-)
