Just speculating, but it might be easier on the equipment than on snow:
- warmer temperature, rubber belt etc. more pliable
- snow/ice more damaging to rubber belt than water
- less variable load on the belt
- no snow/ice clogging up moving parts
- water spray on any air-cooled bits would be more effective than snow or cold air
212 km at, say, 50 km/h would be a little over 4 hours. I'd sure like to think a modern 4 stroke, or even a modern 2 stroke would be able to run that long continuously without any problems.
It looked like he ran out of fuel at the end. I'd say either that or operator fatigue would be the limitations.
