It somehow senses (I guess resistance/impedance) and guesses what it is. Just in case you have plugged in something else and it guessed wrong, it pops up the dialog.

I think it guesses correct, asks me but I can't understand. You see I insert headsets, why you ask me again are you use headset or computer's sound? It's silly... :)
