Here's the problem with the "supporter via association" approach - it implies a standard that doesn't hold up well to application.

Case in point, but coming at it from a different angle: Jimmy Carter is reportedly getting better in his fight against cancer. (Certainly glad to hear that). Having said that, he's benefitting from an immunotherapy drug, Keytruda, which was developed in Israel. Why is that relevant? Because Carter is a strong anti-Israel activist - he supports boycotts, divestments, and sanctions against Israel and has even called Israel an apartheid-like state. So he is essentially lobbying aggressively against the very country whose medical technology is improving his life.

See what I'm getting at?
