I've always checked them in, and then accessed the diff tool from the right click context menu. There may be another way of doing it, but I haven't run into it yet.

Unfortunately, much of what I work with is in non-ASCII formats (I see far too many files with COMP-3 and COMP-9 data coming down from COBOL shops) so the diff tool doesn't help a great deal there. I've adapted some stuff from K&R and Plauger to help out, and there are some good tools (in source form!) available from the GNU project people (FSF), too.
