In this I would follow Kevins line of thought completely. Nam brought no violence from vietnamese people to US soil. 9/11 changed that (the attempts before from jehadic motives should have rung more bells, but...)

It has been my belief for some time, that the overpowering supremacy of western technology will evoke asymmetrical warfare in western homelands, but I think this has not really percolated into the upper ranks of both military and policy decision makers: they are saving soldiers lives, but in refusing to offer targets over there shift the focus even more to terrorist actions. And to survivors / relatives of western attacks going at least in part against true non-combatants it will be very similar to being atacked by terrorists.
