As I gave some history in my blog post that I referenced, I don't feel the need to reply to most of your comments and Joel's comments.
Only other comment I have - I am also now helping the SQL Server User Group (the one you mentioned) as a speaker coordinator. They have people to run the event but they've had difficulty getting speakers - so I'm giving them a hand.
