Yes I'm aware of the major following of Navision in Europe. I have looked at it several times. The issue in my experience has been the buy in cost. I have been in the warehouse business for many years (although I'd like move away) and the last time we looked at the cost it turned out to be approx. $25,000 per user for ownership (that does not include yearly upgrades and maintenance). Still one of the world's largest 3PL warehouses use it daily in Europe (in the Netherlands).

I never thought much of Great Plains - I wouldn't care if it went away. That said, it still has a large number of licenses in the U.S..

Even with all that said - the real concern is MS staying with either product for the long run. MS is not in the accounting business (never was really). And I could see them dropping or selling off the both products in the future. I.e. MS dropped "Small Business Accounting" when it realized that it couldn't beat Quick Books. And I suspect that MS is losing the war with Sage when it comes to ERP systems too.

As far as .Net. .Net has been around for 12 years now and it has gained a following - that is true. But it has never been the most popular - Java has been for all the those past 12 years. And now it appears that JavaScript is moving up to number one. The tech behind the Web does not need .Net. And as MS moves to the cloud we will see MS following the lead of the world standards and those standards are not .Net.
