A more common way to handle this situation is for a click or mouseover on the user name to activate a menu-style dropdown, which displays an option to log off.
BTW "log off" is used more commonly than "log out" for some time now, by Microsoft and others. I suspect people complained that logout sounds like something you do in the bathroom :)
"Sign out" is also becoming more popular.
