When the central issue of the day becomes what vile name to call one's opponent, things are pretty good at the republic, however unseemly that might sound.

Better fighting over that than a major war or recession.

I've been reading Washington & Hamilton, a good account of the relationship between the two founders and their key roles in getting everything on course.

I was shocked to read about the nastiness that flew back and forth between W&H on the one hand and Jefferson and Madison on the other.
The nastiness came from both sides. Washington made the snowballs and Hamilton threw them.
Next to those people, Joe Wilson looks like a boy scout.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
