XFRX does work quite well to generate Excel and Word documents as an output format -- but the resulting documents aren't editable in general. In other words, you can load the document in Word or Excel and in general it will look and print OK -- but editing it or trying to select and copy sections will be a bear. This is because the resulting output tends to be a bunch of individual frames into where the text has been placed -- i.e. it's a bunch of absolutely-positioned boxes for each of the elements.
As far as I know, the only way you can produce "normal" Excel files with formatting would be to use automation.
