The "back" arrow of your browser often can bring you back to a state where your input is still editable - at least in FF (tested just now)
And as a side rule if I have something long and important typed into a browser field, I sometimes use simple copy&paste into a local document ;-))

Thinking in earnest about such a functonality: it should NOT save such a draft server side IMO (not only, but in part because of privacy issues: in the past-Snowden days not everything should be sent across points where such "temporary thoughts" could be intercepted) - the newer HTML5 long cookies or better the newer HTML storage interfaces like IndexDB should allow for a save of text under the key of the message ID, perhaps even with a versioning count if one wants to go to extreme. Gracefully handling older browsers with an explanation would be perfectly all right for me - if user decides to use older browser, he has to live with the consequences. Benefit of cookies would be the option of setting expiration in advance, whereas space in those other storage areas is not unlimited and further coding for housekeeping might be necessary. Cost/benefit ratio unclear, unless Michel already has some tested script in his routines or can find some routines easy to adapt. But you could ask for such a feature, adressing it best to Michel Fournier under Universal Thread header/section - feel free to cut part of this answer and add / change your ideas.
