Don't get me wrong there are ODBC drivers available on Linux. But the setup is not very easy IMO. And most important - the free ones are not as good. I'm able to get around most of the issues (like not being able to use some feature of the MS SQL server - I can't think of one at the moment). I have always gotten around the issues either by using older ways or writing a SP. That said, it works.
