I could see one advantage over windows server - clustering. In the Linux world it is very easy to cluster. I believe there is a PostgreSQL install that uses 100's of computers all supporting one clustered database. I went to a San Francisco PG (postgres) meeting were they spoke about how it was done and the performance they got. Of course I have never had a reason to use clustering - I have only used replication (mostly as a backup tool). I have used the slave (the backup computer) to run reports. But I did not get a performance improvement because the network was the real issue and not the computer providing the data.
